Nap York to the rescue! I heard about this place a couple weeks ago, having just opened. I hobbled over to Starbucks and preceded to have a mini melt down as Calvin Harris played in the background. I realized as soon as my driver dropped me off two whole blocks away from home (that's New York blocks) that I didn't have my keys with me. So what is one of New Yorkers biggest fears? (besides being trapped on a train with a massive subway rat).well, for me yesterday it was being locked out of my apartment.with a broken ankle in crutches. With delicious homemade breakfast and a refreshing swimming pool, it’s the perfect little respite from the city. I’ve also stayed in Bay Shore at the Ocean Bay House an adorable B&B walking distance to the Bay Shore ferry terminal. There are cute hotels, but I usually come for the day. Full of beautiful architecture, great restaurants and bars.ĭuring the summer, rentals can be hard to come by unless you made your plans ahead of time. The villages of Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines have been gay-friendly since before Stonewall. Fire Island is also known as a fun escape for our LGBTQIA community. ![]() I absolutely love it! I’ve never been to the Keys, but this is what I imagine it feels like, freedom and a damn good time. A free spirit who surfs around the world and documents his travels in and out of the water during our cold months here in NY and then returns in the summer to run his little place and put smiles on people’s faces. I met the owner my first time on the island. On the weekends there are live bands and you can come and go in your bathing suit with the beach only a couple feet away. It’s quite literally a little shack in the middle of this village with cold drinks and yummy snacks. There lies my favorite little place called The Shack at Atlantique. Too many restrictions, so I go to the next village over (4 min on the water taxi, 30 minute walk on the beach) Atlantique Beach, where anything goes. Ocean Beach is pretty strict as far as what you can do on the beach (ie no loud music, no alcohol, no eating…etc). My usual go to is Bay Shore ferry to Ocean Beach, and then hop on the water taxi to Atlantique. ![]() Depending on where you are going, the fares can range from $9-$30 depending on where you are headed, but so worth it if you want to be able to walk the next day, lol. I like to use the very convenient water taxis they have around the island. During the summer months, you want to get there early, as bikes go quick (and trains and ferries fill up pretty quick too). Some of the terrain is not optimal, so know your routes before heading out. The island is 31 miles long, and there are many bike shops for you to grab a bike for the day and explore. Once you step unto the island, time slows down, shoes are optional and you can leave all your worries on that ferry. From these stops, you will hop on the Fire Island Ferry, which is a lovely 30-35 min ride on the Long Island Sound ($11 one way, + $9 more if you bring cargo). No cars are allowed on the island (except the local ones already there). So how do you get to Fire Island? From Manhattan, you hop on the LIRR from Penn Station towards Bay Shore, Sayville or Patchogue (roughly 1-1.5 hours).
